Vitra Eames Lounge Chair FAQs
What is the chair made from, and what are the finish options?
Shell: Moulded plywood shaped into three curved forms (headrest, backrest, seat), veneered in a choice of updated finishes.
Upholstery: Options include Premium F leather (smooth cowhide with slight sheen), Natural F Leather (softer, open-grain leather), and Nubia fabric (a wool-blend bouclé).
Base/Support: Die-cast aluminium in polished or mixed polished/black powder-coated finishes. The ottoman base is four-star, while the chair uses a five-star swivelling base.
What are the dimensions?
- Classic Size: Approx. Height 84 cm, Width 84 cm, Depth 85–91 cm, Seat Height 38 cm
- New (XL) Size: Slightly taller—Height 89 cm and Depth up to 92 cm, sharing width and seat height with Classic
- Ottoman: Width 63 cm, Depth 56 cm, Height 42 cm
Why are there two different sizes?
To better suit taller individuals, Vitra developed the 'New Dimensions' model in coordination with the Eames Office, expanding on the original 1956 design to preserve ergonomics without compromise.
How do I spot an authentic Vitra piece rather than a replica?
Manufacturer: Vitra is the only licensed producer of the Eames chair in Europe.
Design Features: No adjustable reclining; the seat is permanently tilted. Genuine versions have 360° swivel bases, angled legs, and the ottoman has a four-star base.
Labels: Originals carry manufacturer or patent labels under cushions or chair shells.
What about comfort and build quality?
The chair was intended to cradle like a 'well-used baseball glove' and initially faced scepticism for its look, but is now celebrated as supremely comfortable and timeless.
How do I care for my chair?
- Leather: Wipe with a soft cloth and mild soap in lukewarm water.
- Wood Veneers: Use gentle, abrasive-free furniture polish.
- Aluminium frames: Polish with a floor wax such as Johnson’s Wood Floor Paste Wax.
- Warranty: 30 years, provided you register as instructed (e.g. via Vitra or retailer).
