Artek Kiila Coat Stand
The Kiila collection is a range of practical, durable furniture designed for hallways, entrances, and modern living spaces.
Inspired by Alvar Aalto’s timeless approach, Norwegian designer Daniel Rybakken has created a construction system rather than just stand-alone pieces.
Each item features solid wooden legs connected with distinctive wedge-shaped metal joints, purposefully left visible as a design statement. ‘Kiila’ means ‘wedge’ in Finnish, reflecting this clever construction detail.
The Kiila Coat Stand is built for strength and longevity, secured with high-grade polyamide pins that also function as handy hooks.
Whether for hanging coats, bags, or accessories, it’s designed to handle daily use with ease. With their robust materials and thoughtful craftsmanship, Kiila pieces bring both function and understated style to any space.

Artek Kiila Coat Stand FAQs
What is it, and who designed it?
The Kiila Coat Stand was designed by Daniel Rybakken for Artek in 2017. Its name comes from the Finnish word kiila, meaning “wedge,” reflecting its distinctive construction.
What is the concept behind the design?
Built like a three‑legged tripod—much like a camera stand Rybakken once used—the Kiila combines solid wooden legs with a visible metal wedge joint. This clear construction emphasises both form and function, echoing Alvar Aalto’s design philosophy.
What are the dimensions and weight?
• Height: 192 cm (≈ 75.6″)
• Width: 54 cm (≈ 21.3″)
• Depth: 48 cm (≈ 18.9″)
• Weight: Around 8.5 kg (≈ 18.7 lbs)
What materials are used?
Legs: Solid ash wood (natural or black-lacquered)
Central wedge & structure: Powder-coated bent steel (black or stone white)
Hooks: Dyed polyamide pins, which double as coat hooks
How many hooks does it have, and what’s its carrying capacity?
It includes 12 high-grade polyamide pins, each functioning as a hook. With its tripod base, the unit remains stable even when supporting heavy coats and bags.
Does it fit in small spaces?
Yes, the stand’s triangular footprint and slim profile make it suitable even for compact halls or apartments.
Is assembly required?
Yes – the stand arrives flat-packed. Assembly is straightforward: attach the wooden legs to the metal wedge and secure them with the polyamide pins. Anti‑slip glides are included.
What colour options are available?
Leg finishes: Natural ash or black lacquer
Metal wedge & hooks: Options in black or stone white powder coat
What makes it durable?
Constructed from high-quality ash, steel and robust polyamide, the stand is built to last. Its design allows each piece to be flat‑packed, reducing transport bulk and making it sustainable.
