Vitra Eames RE DAX Plastic Armchair Fully Upholstered
Eames Plastic DAX Armchairs are from the same family of chairs as the Eames Plastic Side chairs but with increased height in the sides of the chairs to provide built in armrests.
There is additional interior upholstery for increased comfort and it's on a four leg base.
These organically shaped chairs were first created by Charles and Ray Eames in 1950 as part of the New York Museum of Modern Art's "low cost furniture design" competition.
They have evolved from the original design with a variety of different bases and the seat shells are now made from recycled consumer plastic.

Vitra Eames RE DAX Plastic Armchair Fully Upholstered FAQs
What does “DAX” stand for?
DAX means Dining Height Armchair with X-Base (four legs). It’s part of the Eames Plastic Chair family, originally designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1950.
What does “RE” mean?
RE indicates that the seat shell is made from recycled post-consumer plastic, giving the chair a sustainable edge while maintaining the same durability, comfort, and quality.
What is different about the fully upholstered version?
The entire inside seat shell is covered with fabric. This provides a softer, warmer feel and an elegant look, while retaining the chair’s organic shape.
What upholstery options are available?
Vitra offers a wide range of fabrics available in numerous colours. You can choose understated neutrals or bold statement tones to suit your interior.
Is the upholstery removable?
No – the full upholstery is permanently fixed to the seat shell and finished with a neat edge band, making it an integral part of the design.
What base does the DAX use?
The chair comes with a robust four-leg tubular steel base, available in polished aluminium or powder-coated finishes.
Is the chair comfortable?
Yes – the DAX already features an ergonomic shell with integrated armrests, and the full upholstery adds a higher level of comfort and warmth, especially for extended sitting.
Where can I use the fully upholstered DAX?
It’s perfect for dining rooms, home offices, meeting rooms, or premium commercial spaces where comfort and design are equally important.
Why choose an original Vitra production?
Vitra manufactures the DAX according to the original Eames specifications, ensuring authentic design, sustainable materials, and long-lasting quality.
