Vitra Eames Stools

In 1960, the Eames Office was commissioned by Time Inc. to outfit the interiors of three lobbies in New York's Rockefeller Center. As part of this project, Charles and Ray Eames designed the plush Lobby Chairs and a series of solid walnut stools.

These turned stools, which can also be used as side tables, are differentiated by the distinctive profiles of their shafts.

For 2025 these stools have been updated and are now available in two finishes - Chestnut (natural) and Walnut (dark).  They also now feature an upgraded surface finish.

Vitra Eames Stools FAQs

What are they, and who designed them?

The Eames Stools were crafted by Charles and Ray Eames in 1960, specifically for the Rockefeller Center lobbies in New York. Today, Vitra faithfully reissues them in Europe.

What are the materials and finishes available?

Made of solid, laminated European walnut, these stools are precision-lathe turned and sealed in either a natural Chestnut or dark Walnut finish, highlighting the rich wood grain.

What sizes or models are available?

There are three classic versions—Model A, B, and C—all sharing the same size:

  • Height: ~38 cm
  • Diameter: ~33 cm

Can they be used as tables?

Absolutely—while traditionally stools, their height makes them versatile enough to function as occasional tables or side tables, perfect beside a lounge chair or sofa.

What about authenticity?

Vitra’s versions are the official, authorised reproductions. They’re renowned for faithful craftsmanship, hefty weight, precise edge detail, and the signature layered-wood construction help distinguish them from replicas.
