Barrie Smith, our Workstation Ergonomics Assessor, shares this practical advice to help you stay comfortable and productive when using display screen equipment every day.
1. Follow the 20:20:20 rule
Every twenty minutes, look twenty feet away for twenty seconds.
This can help reduce eye fatigue and strain associated with spending hours at a visual display unit (VDU) or reading fine print documents.
Did you know: This can also improve concentration levels and productivity.
2. Regular breaks
Aim for frequent movement away from the seated position and regular micro-pauses between tasks every 30-60 minutes.
If possible, try taking breaks away from your screen, allowing you to stand up, move and change posture.
3. Postural Advice
Your feet should be grounded with your heels fully engaged with the floor or on a footrest if they don't reach the ground easily.
Arrange your chair so your hips are placed higher than your knees. This positions the pelvis appropriately to help align the natural 'S' shape of the spine.
Ensure your upper limbs are in a relaxed position. Your elbows and forearms should be parallel to the work surface when using your keyboard and mouse.
