5 Design Tips to Create a Better Workspace at Home or in the Office

Debs Good, our Design Manager, has put together five important tips to help you create a great place to work.

1. Your Virtual Backdrop

With so many of us spending time on video calls, what’s behind you is just as important as what’s in front of you. Using a digital background can sometimes feel a little artificial, or even like you’re trying to hide something. Taking a bit of time to consider your real backdrop shows you’ve thought about your space and how you’re presenting yourself. This applies just as much at home as it does in the office.

In my home office, I’ve styled the space to feel like an extension of me. It often sparks conversation and brings a bit of energy to my calls. If painting or big changes aren’t an option, shelves or artwork can be a great way to add interest. You can still get creative with what you display, making your background feel thoughtful and personal.

We regularly include pods and privacy booths in our office designs. They’re brilliant for sound and focus, but also offer a great opportunity to elevate the look of your space. Choosing the right fabric internally can completely change the feel, whether it’s a soft, textured finish or something bold and graphic. Brands like BuzziSpace even offer printed fabrics, so you can really customise the booth to suit your style, your brand, or simply create a backdrop that looks great on screen.

2. Colour

Colour plays a huge role in how a space feels. It can lift your energy, improve focus, and set the tone for the day. In my home office, I’ve chosen a bold electric blue Yes Colours wall. It adds vibrancy to the room, helping spark conversation during online meetings and creating a positive atmosphere.

If painting your walls isn’t an option, there are still plenty of ways to introduce colour. Artwork, decorative objects, or open shelving styled with books, ceramics, or colourful stationery can all add personality without a full redesign. You can also take accent colours from your branding or incorporate colours that resonate with your colleagues. It’s a great way to connect and personalise the space.

In an office, starting with neutrals in the main areas creates a versatile, professional backdrop. Neutrals suit different tastes and maintain a calm atmosphere, while accents of colour and branding can introduce personality, making the space feel dynamic and cohesive.

3. The Power of Scent

Smell is one of those things that often gets forgotten in an office, but it can make such a difference to how a space feels. The right scent can lift your mood, help you focus, or create a calm, inviting atmosphere. Whether it’s a reed diffuser, an oil burner, or just having some fresh flowers or greenery around, adding scent makes a space feel more like home. Flowers are an easy win as not only do they smell amazing, they look great too.

Brands like Vitra, Muuto and HAY do some beautiful vases and pots. The Arcs Vase from HAY, for example, is part of a whole range of accessories, so you can mix and match with mirrors, storage, or lighting if you want everything to tie together.

4. Hydration

It’s easy to forget how much hydration impacts productivity, but even mild dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, and trouble focusing. We get it, drinking enough water isn’t always easy. One thing that’s helped me? Getting a water bottle I actually like.

It sounds simple, but having something stylish or fun (and always within reach) makes it way easier to stay hydrated. And don’t forget, coffee and tea count towards hydration too, so a cute coffee cup is always a win in my book!

To totally elevate your hydration game, why not go for the Bump Teapot and Teacups from Tom Dixon? They’re not just practical—they look beautiful too. Perfect for making visitors feel a bit special, or if you’re working from home, they add a touch of luxury to your day.

5. Power Where You Need It: Why We Love Omnicharge

In any office design, especially in spaces like boardrooms, power access is crucial, but it doesn’t have to disrupt the design. With Omnicharge, the need for cutouts or grommets in beautiful surfaces, like a sleek marble boardroom table, is eliminated. No more fighting over the one outlet in a meeting room, crawling under desks to plug in, or running out of charge mid-call.

Omnicharge provides the flexibility to move, change, and rearrange spaces without worrying about fixed power points. It allows you to charge laptops, phones, and tablets anywhere in the office, whether you’re at a hot desk, in a meeting, or in a collaborative space, without being tied to the wall or a permanent power setup. This makes it easier to create dynamic, adaptable environments that can evolve with your team’s needs.
