Vitra Standard SP Dining Chair

Chairs take the most stress on their back legs, where they bear the weight of the user's upper body. The engineer, architect and designer Jean Prouvé incorporated this simple insight in his design for the Standard SP Chair.

While steel tubing suffices for the front legs, since they are subject to less stress, the back legs are made of voluminous hollow sections that transfer the primary weight to the floor.

Key Features:

  • Choice of frame colour
  • Choice of seat and back colour
  • Choice of glides

Wellworking Says...

"The classic Standard chair design, re-imagined in plastic at a lower price point whilst retaining the original's iconic Prouvé look."

Vitra Standard SP Dining Chair FAQs

What is the design inspiration behind the Standard SP Chair?

Jean Prouvé’s original design from 1934 focused on structural integrity and functionality. He observed that the rear legs of a chair bear the most weight, leading him to design them with robust, hollow steel sections, while the front legs are made of lighter tubular steel. The Standard SP (Siège en Plastique) maintains this principle, combining it with modern materials for a contemporary look.

What are the dimensions of the chair?

The Standard SP Chair has the following dimensions:

Overall Height: 82 cm

Seat Height: 46.5 cm

Width: 42 cm

Depth: 49 cm

What materials are used in its construction?

The chair features a seat and backrest made from ASA plastic, known for its durability and resistance to environmental factors. The base comprises bent sheet steel and tubular steel with a smooth powder-coated finish, ensuring both strength and aesthetic appeal.

What colour options are available?

Vitra offers the Standard SP Chair in a variety of finely modulated colours for both the seat/backrest and the base. This allows for customisation to suit different interior design preferences.

How should I care for and maintain the chair?

To clean the Standard SP Chair, use a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents, as they may damage the powder-coated finish and plastic surfaces.

Is the chair suitable for outdoor use?

No, the Standard SP Chair is designed for indoor use only. Exposure to outdoor elements may compromise its finish and structural integrity.
